Please welcome our new Executive Director, Sonia Cruz, Ph.D., C.E.H.P.
Dr. Cruz comes to us with over 20 years of Environmental Health experience. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1970 followed by a Master of Science in Biology in 1977 from the University of Puerto Rico. In 1991, she received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Marine Sciences also from the University of Puerto Rico. Dr. Cruz holds certifications in Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal, Food Protection, Contract Management and is a Certified Pool/Spa Operator. Sonia began her career in Environmental Health as an Environmental Specialist I with the Seminole County Health Department in 1991. She obtained a position with the Bureau of Onsite Sewage Programs at the Florida Department of Health in 1995 where she remained until she retired as an Environmental Health Program Consultant in 2008. Upon retirement, Dr. Cruz started her own environmental consulting and training company. Prior to her career in Environmental Health, Dr. Cruz was an Associate Professor in Biology for the University of Puerto Rico and Ponce Technological University College (1972 - 1990) and was an Adjunct Professor in the Biology Department for Seminole Community College (1991 - 1995). Sonia has written many articles which have been published in nationally recognized environmental health-related magazines. Dr. Cruz has been a member of FEHA since 1994, served as the Secretary for the Board of Directors from 1997 - 2001, and brings a vast amount of environmental health experience to the FEHA Executive Director position.
